Can bartenders and taxi drivers be brought to justice? 2009-04-17
Latvian tourist board director tries to solve tourists’ problems
According to Uldis Vitolins, director of the Latvian State Tourism Development Agency, foreign tourists’ good impressions of Latvia are being destroyed by unkind and dishonourable taxi drivers and certain bars that deliberately overcharge. On April 15, it was announced that the Ministry of Economy had created a working group that was drawing up new regulations that would impose tight restrictions on taxi drivers. However, Vitolins said he had no idea how to solve the problem with bars that apparently have two separate menus – one for locals and one for foreigners. Even police officers, he said, are unable to bring the owners of such inhospitable places to justice.
