Lufthansa ready to do battle for Italy2009-01-30
Karl Ulrich Garnadt, a member of the board at Lufthansa, has said at a presentation of the German airline’s new Italian unit that it may in the longer term make Milan's Malpensa Airport part of its hub network as it builds up its presence in Italy. It was widely reported last year that Lufthansa could have been a possible candidate to tie up with struggling Alitalia, but Air France-KLM has since taken up that position instead. Garnadt said that Lufthansa was considering further network expansion in Italy, including a connection between Milan's Malpensa and Rome's Fiumicino airports, a lucrative route currently dominated by Alitalia.
