flyLAL-Lithuanian Airlines has been one of the key partners of the public enterprise Vilnius – European Capital of Culture 2009. The bankrupt carrier was due to transport hundreds of participants to the Capital of Culture events throughout 2009, support estimated at LTL 4.5 million (EUR 1.3 million). Zydre Gaveliene, general director of the Lithuanian branch of the travel agency Estravel, commented that flights starting from May have now been arranged with other airlines. She adds that now the bankruptcy of flyLAL-Lithuanian Airlines is clear the government should take the initiative and create the necessary infrastructure that will take care of the arrival of tourists to Lithuania.
