Construction of Helsinki-Tallinn tunnel uncertain 2009-01-15
The European Union has said that it will not allocate money to researching the feasibility and profitability of constructing a rail tunnel between the Estonian and Finnish capitals. A total of EUR 800,000 was being requested for that purpose. The Interreg programme that decides such matters will disclose its official explanations shortly, writes the Finnish daily Helsingin Sanomat. Some Helsinki officials comment that the problem could lie behind Estonia’s domestic politics, in which relations between the Tallinn City municipality, led by the sometimes populist Centre Party, and the right-of-centre national governing coalition are not good.
