Record number of cruise tourists to visit Estonia2008-05-30
The Port of Tallinn expects Estonia to be visited by 370,000 individuals on cruise ships this year, up significantly from 295,000 in 2007. According to Sven Ratassepp, Port of Tallinn’s public relations director, Baltic Sea cruises now come third worldwide in terms of volume after the destinations of the Caribbean Sea and the Mediterranean Sea. While 275 cruise ships landed at quays operated by the Port of Tallinn last year, this year the number should be 301. Ratassepp said that Estonia is better known than before, so tourists are already asking whether their trips will include Tallinn. Tourists are charmed by the Old Town and they only need to take a few steps in order to reach it from the port – no need for long bus rides or excursions, he added. Five cruise ships will enter the Port of Saaremaa this year and the port hopes to see several thousand tourists. It also expects very soon to host the first yachts of the season.
