Lithuania – still the backwoods of Europe?

Lufthansa offers six new direct trans-Atlantic flights from Frankfurt and Munich this spring. However, for passengers coming to Vilnius from Western Europe the alternatives are not so interesting. airBaltic and flyLAL-Lithuanian Airlines fly between Vilnius and European capitals and are often introduced to customers as low-cost airlines. Yet in reality, reaching the Lithuanian capital is a luxury. Last year, the number of British tourists arriving in Lithuania dropped by 6 percent overall and 18 percent in summer. Indre Trakimaite, head of the Lithuanian Tourist Information Centre in London, says that high ticket prices had an influence on the trend.
