Will tourists be safe in Riga this summer?2008-04-30
Officially, the tourism season starts in Riga on May 1. The new season opens in Riga this coming Saturday. Vice Mayor Almers Ludviks will take part and the novelties this year include horse-and-carts in Old Riga, wooden ships in the canal and free excursions in the Art Nouveau district. Although responsible institutions promise to take care of the security of foreign guests, considerable improvements are not expected. There are doubts whether the police can even provide foreigners information in English. Brochures with a help hotline are available only in Riga. From May 1 to September 21, a State Police “mobile management centre” will be located in Dome Square.
