Museum of History

Considered one of the oldest museums in Europe (it was founded in 1773), the Museum of the History of Riga and Navigation is housed in the East wing of the Doms Church ensemble, an architectural monument in itself. The museum’s collection contains more than half a million pieces, including items that reflect Riga’s political and economic development, its culture and daily life from it beginnings to the present day, and the history of Latvian seafaring. Among the more noteworthy items are the throne of Charles XII of Sweden and one of his boots. The mummified hand of a criminal and the 16th-century executioner’s sword present some of the more gruesome highlights. The exhibition also includes many models of ships that have been connected with Riga from the 10th-20th century.
