Riga Canal Start by enjoying a relaxed boat ride along the Riga Canal right through the centre of the city. The bravest may be tempted to take a swim but this is something we do not recommend because of the beavers living in the canal and the policemen patrolling on both of its shores. The green areas flanking the canal were established soon after the old city ramparts were torn down around 1860. The now useless rampart moat was smartly widened and turned into a canal. Around 1890 the green area was completely reconstructed by the garden architect Georg Kuphaldt, and it has not changed much since then. Today it is one of the loveliest green retreats in downtown Riga. The canal is 3,2 km long, around 2 meters deep, and crossed by 16 bridges.
